Airports

Whether serving international, domestic, recreational or military purposes, airports are vital to a country’s economy. As populations continue to grow, more demand and stress is placed on this infrastructure, increasing the need for airport rehabilitation and upgrades.

As a result of years in the civil transport sector, we’re able to provide solutions for many airport applications.

Lighting Upgrades
Our high early strength grout range has assisted installation of lighting upgrades during curfew hours for almost 20 years. Bluey Engineers assist in product specification, project planning and on-site installation to ensure each project is completed in a safe, efficient and environmentally acceptable manner.

Specifications often call for a grout which has low shrinkage, is fast setting and can be rapidly installed to meet the stringent timelines for night works. These grouts are often required to carry the load of a plane within an hour or two of placement.

Pavement Replacements
Our experience with BluCem FSC – Fast Set Concrete, has given us the insight required to successfully deliver time-critical runway projects. As the current aeroplane curfew for the busiest international airports is from 11pm to 6am, we work with specialised contractors to place runway slabs and return runways to service within strict timelines.

BluCem FSC has the capabilities of supporting planes of all sizes within hours after placement.

Underslab Grouting

There are many reasons airport pavements and slabs weaken and crack. It can be excessive weights from planes, subgrade failure or even just the passage of time. Whatever the case, these critical assets need remediation. Underslab grouting can be a reliable method to rehabilitate airport slabs, rather than excavating and replacing the entire affected area.

BluCem HE80 grout is often specified by road authorities due to its high fluidity, rapid strength gain and +100 year durability. The engineered grout not only consolidates the subbase, (creating a structurally sound subbase for the pavement) it also ensures the surface slab remains fixed to the ground.

Electrical Under Bore Grouting

Electrical underbore grouting is used to aid in the dissipation of heat from high voltage electrical conduits. This increases the cable’s insulation whilst allowing for additional voltage loads to be placed on cables, creating superior cable ratings and a reduction in long term costs.

BluCem LH60 has a thermal resistivity (TR) 0.69km-W and low exothermic heat to avoid heat damage to the conduits during curing. BluCem LH60 can also be supplied in 1000kg bulk bags which allow for bulk mixing in concrete agitator trucks for improved productivity on site.

Joint Sealing

Contraction and expansion joints at airports are regularly exposed to extreme weights, temperatures and heavy-duty use. To be reliable in airport applications, a joint sealer must exhibit excellent resistance to movement, heat, fuel, oils and chemicals.

BluSeal JPress is our flexible, joint sealing solution. The JPress concrete joint sealant is made of a Santoprene™ thermoplastic profile, for the purpose of long-term sealing. The product is easy installed without the need of on-site priming and joint preparation. The easy ‘push-in’ system relies on compression to create a friction seal. This allows for a greater movement capacity than traditional liquid applied sealants. The push-in system is also more considerate to the environment by eliminating the need for excess chemicals from packaging and clean-up activities related to traditional liquid sealants

Non-conductive Reinforcement

Zones for aircrafts is a design consideration for new and existing airports. A critical safety consideration involves minimising connections between steel elements and ensuring the safe ‘earthing’ of metal pipework, fittings and reinforcement. Without the right measures in place, metal elements can becoming live with dangerously high voltages causing sparks and potential explosions.

In partnership with FiReP, we introduced BluGeo GRP concrete reinforcement. The reinforcing bar is made from a glass-fibre reinforced polymer which can replace standard steel mesh to strengthen and connect pavement slabs. The non-conductive GRP bar has an extremely high load-carrying capacity. At ¼ the weight of steel it offers designers and specifiers an innovative solution to traditional electrically conductive concrete pavement reinforcement.
